Sixteen years old at her high school prom He’s kissing her lips and he’s coming on strong. She gives into him even though she knows love won’t stay. She’ll let go tomorrow, but tonight she’s holding on to a heartache. Nine months later as the story unfolds There’s ten little fingers and ten little toes. She hold on to him even though she knows he can’t stay. She’ll let go tomorrow, but tonight she’s holding on to a heartache. Chorus: Tomorrow she knows that her heart might forsake her But tonight she’s going wherever it takes her. She know life aint easy and she’ll either bend or she’ll break. You’ve got to be strong when you’re the one who’s holding on to a heartache. In an old wooden box hidden under the stairs Is a faded corsage and a strand of red hair. One last time she’ll open her heart to the pain. She’ll let go tomorrow, but tonight she’s holding on to a heartache. Tomorrow she knows that her heart might forsake her But tonight she’s going wherever it takes her. She know life aint easy and she’ll either bend or she’ll break. You’ve got to be strong when you’re the one who’s holding on to a heartache. Twenty years later a letter arrives. She’s waited for this moment most of her life. She picks up the phone even though she knows she can’t stay. She’ll let go tomorrow but tonight she’s holding on to a heartache. Nothing’s forever now this we all know. He’s there by her side when it’s her time to go. He softly whispers, “Mama I wish you could stay”. He’ll let go tomorrow but tonight he’s holding on to a heartache. Chorus: Tomorrow he knows that his heart will forsake him But tonight he’s going wherever it takes him. Life may bend him but he knows that he’ll never break. You’ve got to be strong when you’re the one who’s holding on to a heartache.
