Lyrics by Bill Schulz II

[Verse 1]
Went to work with a plan a brand new scheme
My raise was coming boss says we're a team
Spent the whole week dreamin' 'bout a new set of tires
And a weekend with my baby full of desire
'Cause Friday rolled around I thought it was a joke
Someone else got the promotion, mine went up in smoke

[Chorus]
Mama always said and I should've listened
You can't cash a dream if it ain't been given
Even when you are down to your last match
Don't go countin' chickens before they hatch

[Verse 2]
Bought a lottery ticket with my last ten
Told the boys at the bar I was finally gonna win
Had the truck paid off, a diamond ring in mind
Our name on a mailbox and a future so fine
But those numbers never hit, she found somebody new
Left me sittin' at this bar with nothin' to do

[Chorus]
Mama always said and I should've listened
You can't cash a dream if it ain't been given
Even when you are down to your last match
Don't go countin' chickens before they hatch

[Bridge]
I'm tired of buildin' dreams on the promise of a maybe
Drinkin' to almost keeps drivin' me crazy
When that door swings open, gonna walk real slow and listen to mama and hang on to hope

[Chorus]
Mama always said and I should've listened
You can't cash a dream if it ain't been given
Even when you are down to your last match
Don't go countin' chickens before they hatch
Even when you are down to your last match
Don't go countin' chickens before they hatch
